The Sample Room in Northeast Minneapolis serves as the girls' hangout and later employment. The bar was originally established in 1880 under the same name. Kegs of beer were floated down the river from the brewery upstream, now the old Grainbelt brewery. The patrons sampled the beeer, giving the bar its name. The bar changed owners and names several times over the last century. The bar was recently renovated and opened under the original name. The tin ceiling is a reminder of the rich history of the building. The new Sample Room was named a historical site in March of 2002.

The Hall of Records was staged at the Walter Library on the University of Minnesota's East Bank Campus. The library was first established in the mid-1800's and served as the school's sole library. Since then, three more have been erected and the Walter Library has been made into the medical library. Great pains have been taken to preserve the Victorian architecture. The arched doorways and 100-foot ceilings made this location an ideal space for the Hall of Records.

Jamie's shelter was shot at the Crinten Minneapolis shelter in south Minneapolis. The shelter houses eighty men nightly and feeds twice as many. It has many community programs for the men that stay there. It also has a free food and clothing program and a free health clinic for those who need it. The shelter is doing well, however is limited on beds and must hold weekly lotteries for the spaces. Several of the shelter's patrons appeared in the film as extras.
